Incorporating technology in the classroom

Fourth graders, in Mrs. Hillman's class, at Wings Park Elementary received the opportunity to link their story writing with technology. The students each wrote a personal story that had impacted their lives and made it into a short movie. Some stories were informative and others just entertaining. For example, Robert Wayne wrote about his experience with asthma and Morgan Lickiss wrote about getting a flat tire on the way to Wisconsin Dells.

After writing their stories, the students made a storyboard showing pictures that would relate to their stories. The students then recorded themselves telling their story on an ipod. Once the stories were recorded on the ipods, the students added pictures either from scanning pictures from home, taking pictures with digital cameras, or locating pictures on the Internet. After creating a file in iphoto, the students downloaded the pictures and their recorded story onto laptops in a program called imovie. From there, the students timed their story with the pictures to create a digital storytelling project. To view a few of these projects, visit the classroom website. http://mrshillman.iowapages.org

Hillman thought of creating this project with her class after talking with Dr. Denise Schmidt, an education professor at Iowa State University, about incorporating more technology into the classroom. Schmidt decided to come to Wings Park and team-teach the project with Hillman. She also brought the ipods and laptops with her, which allowed more students to work on the projects at one time.
