The Turkey crested at the Eldorado reading station at approximately noon Monday at 22.11 feet. This exceeds the previous record set in 1993 of 19.6 feet.
Firefighters, EMS, law enforcement, elected officials, volunteers, family members all worked together to help evacuate personnel and sand bag the communities of Waucoma, Alpha, Auburn, Eldorado, Clermont and Elgin. Water damaged homes in all communities and as of 9 p.m. Monday, the Turkey had not crested at the city of Elgin.
The bridge on county road W42 over the Turkey River, between West Union and Ossian, was destroyed by pier failure. Duration of the closure is undetermined at this time, but estimated at not less than six months. In Clermont an earth berm levee gave way, which allowed water to flood the septic lagoon, campground and houses near the river.
County officials warn motorists to not cross road closed barricades even if the water has receded until all roads have been checked by county officials.
The flood damage recovery process will begin once all response is complete throughout the county.
