BASEBALL - Mustangs score second WaMaC victory
SPRINGVILLE — The Independence High School baseball team overcame a difficult opener to pick up its second WaMaC victory of the season Monday in the nightcap of a doubleheader against Anamosa.
Anamosa scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the opener 10-9 before Indee came back to take the nightcap 14-3 in six innings.
“They did really well (coming back from the loss),” IHS coach Byron Reeder said.
Reeder opted to play all three of his freshmen in the game and said all three came through.
“I just wanted to give them a shot,” he said. “Adam (Flaucher) was doing pretty well at third base so I left him in there. It turned out they did really well with that, so I was really pleased.”
Anamosa led 3-2 after four innings before the Mustangs exploded with seven in the fifth. It added five more in the sixth for a 14-3 lead that ended the game early. Michael Reiff had a key two-run fifth-inning double and Cameron Hayward went 4-for-5 in the game with an RBI double.
Independence had a seven-run fourth inning in the opener to take a 7-2 lead, only to see Anamosa came back with six in its half of the fourth to lead 8-7. The Mustangs scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to regain the advantage, only to see the Raiders score runs in the sixth and seventh to come from behind.
Hayward had a two-run double during Indee’s fourth-inning rally that saw eight different Mustangs collect base hits.
Indee also played in the Waterloo West tournament over the weekend, dropping games to the host team and Sumner-Fredericksburg.
The Mustangs fell 20-6 to West in the opener. Independence had 10 hits in the game including two each from Woody Robinson and Keaton Hosch. Blaize Cabell had three runs batted in.
The Mustangs battled back from a 5-0 deficit to pull within 5-4 in the third-place game. IHS out-hit the Cougars 10-8 as Cabell had three hits and Chris Shannon had two. Hayward hit his fourth home run of the season in the loss.
Independence (4-13) is off until Friday, when it hosts Gladbrook-Reinbeck.
