Oelwein students to be part of music tour of Europe

OELWEIN - Oelwein students will be traveling with the Iowa Ambassadors of Music 2008 tour of Europe. This tour will include the following Oelwein High School students: Erica Recker-Oboe, Hannah VanSickle-Flute, Natalie Saur-Trumpet, Abby Schmitz-Euphonium, Jimmy Lindstrom-Tuba, Adam Recker-Tuba, and Cody Kuhens-Percussion. Doug and Susan McFarlane will serve as advisors on the trip. This marks the 7th tour for Doug and the 6th tour for Susan.

The overall make up of the trip includes over 400 students and 50 advisors from all over the State of Iowa. A portion of the students will be singing in a 160 voice choir, and the remainder will be performing in the band.

The students will be performing in each country they visit serving as ambassadors for Iowa. Students will be visiting London, Paris, Crans Montana-Switzerland; Seefeld and Innsbruck, Austria; Leichtenstein, Dachau and Rottenburg on de Taber in Germany. Students are looking forward to this "trip of a lifetime."

The choir director is Dr. Paul Torkelson from Wartburg College in Waverly. The band director and tour director is Dr. Morgan Jones who is retired from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. These directors are assisted by a cadre of over 50 band and choir directors who serve as experts on their voice part or instrument, and also perform with the groups in concert.


The tour will begin with a pre-tour camp at a site to be determined. (The flood of 2008 as made the facilities which were designated unsuitable.) Camp will run from June 29-July 3. Students will be gone on the European tour from July 3 through July 17.
