V-S defeats Knoxville in pitcher’s duel to advance to regional finale against Carlisle
By Brett Myers, Sports Editor
GRINNELL - The Vinton-Shellsburg softball team moved to one game away from state on Tuesday in Grinnell.
The Vikettes defeated Knoxville, 1-0, to advance to Wednesday’s regional final against Carlisle. It is the first time in school history that the Vikettes have advanced to a softball regional final.
The contest resumed play in the bottom of the third inning after having been suspended at that point on Monday due to lightning. The score was 0-0 at that point.
The game was a pitcher’s duel, with a combined three hits between the teams and just one run scored overall. Senior Liz Hill pitched a two-hit shutout for the Vikettes.
“Liz pitched a heck of a game,” V-S coach Bari Parrott said. “But that’s how softball should be played at this level. Good pitching and good defense.”
It was Hill who broke the Vikettes’ hitless drought in the bottom of the fourth inning. She singled and was then replaced by courtesy runner Sydney Etten. Knoxville first baseman Becca Harrington was called for obstruction, which placed Etten on second with none out.
Vikette sophomore Kristin Bramow then stepped to the plate. She laid down the sacrifice bunt to advance Etten to third. Etten then scored on a wild pitch for the game’s only run.
Knoxville put together its best offensive efforts early in the game. In the top of the third, the Panthers put their two hits of the game back-to-back to put runners on first and second with one out. A pair of grounders later, however, and V-S was out of the inning without any damage.
Knoxville got its final baserunners in the top of the fourth. A pair of walks put runners on first and second for the Panthers with one out. Jori May then popped up to first baseman Alex McGill for out number two. Tara McCombs then stepped into the box. She battled Hill and worked the count to 3-2, including fouling several balls off. But Hill got the strikeout to end the inning and pitched a perfect game the rest of the way for V-S.
Knoxville pitcher Kelsey Kingery pitched a one-hitter for the Panthers but was still tagged with the loss.
Fourth-ranked Carlisle won the other regional semifinal.
“We’re going to have to play a lot better against Carlisle,” Parrott said. “Carlisle is much better than them [Knoxville] and they were pretty good.”
The regional final was played in Grinnell on Wednesday at 7 p.m., with the winner advancing to the state softball tournament, which begins Tuesday, July 15.
