Irvine, Thimmesch take Indee victories
INDEPENDENCE — With the season coming to an end a full house of race fans settled in at Independence Motor Speedway for season championship night.
Fan favorite awards were handed out to Vern Jackson, Kyle Bentely, Brian Irvine, Dale Hackwell Jr. and Chris Luloff.
The IMCA SportMods took to the track first with Jim Buhlman and Kaleb Bentley on the outside pole. A mid-race caution bunched the field giving Danny Dvorak a chance for the lead. Kyle Bentley used the caution to slide pass Kaleb Bentley for third and Joe Docekal moved into fourth. With few laps remaining Docekal moved into third as Dvorak tried getting around Buhlman. Checkers in the air Buhlman took the win, Dvorak, Docekal, and Kyle Bentley rounded out the top four. With Dvorak’s second place he took home the points championship.
Brian Irvine took home another victory this season in the IMCA Stock Car division. Norman Chesmore and Dan Trimble quickly made there way into second and third as points leader Jarod Weepie was trying the low line. After the halfway point Irvine had moved into lapped traffic and Weepie had passed Trimble taking third. Irvine took the win Chesmore, Weepie and Trimble rounded out the top four respectively. Jarod Weepie was able to take home the points championship.
The IMCA Modifieds put on an exciting show as the points race between Vern Jackson and Troy Cordes was still close. Jackson took the lead early with Jonathan Thimmesch and Troy Cordes battling for second. By lap three Jackson had started to pull away but Cordes had worked passed Thimmesch and moved into second slowly beganning to catch Jackson until the halfway point when Jackson got a flat and went to the pits giving Cordes the lead. Thimmesch was able to get around Cordes taking the lead as a caution occurred. Thimmesch took the checkers followed by Cordes, Luloff and Jeff Kriz. With Cordes’s runner-up finish he clinched the 2008 points championship.
Jaime Whitaker took the early lead in the IMCA Hobby Stocks with Quinton Miller right on his tail. A caution just before the halfway point bunched the field with points leader Chris Luloff now into third and Josh Irvine right behind. Luloff was moving pass Miller on the high side and moving quickly towards Whitaker. A caution with three laps remaining gave Luloff the last shot to take the lead with Irvine right behind him. The green waved and Luloff took his shot and was able to get around Whitaker and take the lead, Irvine saw his chance and passed Whitaker for second. Checkers waving Luloff took the win and the points championship.
A caution free IMCA Late Model feature capped off the night as Tyler Bruening took his second victory of the season. Darin Burco and Bryan Klein began to chase each other back and fourth for second with Darrin Ackerman closing in. Bruening took the checkers with Burco, Ackerman and Hackwell rounding out the top four. A close point race ended the season with Hackwell just able to hold of Burco to take the points championship.
