New Century Fine Arts Club begins second year
Annual meeting to take place Monday
By Dean Close, Times Editor
The New Century Fine Arts Club was organized at the beginning of last year as the Vinton-Shellsburg School District opened its new high school.
The Club’s purpose is to raise funds for band, choir, speech and drama programs at the high school.
Club members donate a minimum of $100 per year to the Club, whose board accepts and reviews funding requests from high school staff members.
The first donations, presented in December of 2007, include funds for a new electronic piano for the choir, and to pay housing expenses for Chelsea Brown during an Honor Band event. The board voted on Thursday to pay student expenses for future honor events, and to provide funding for frames for drama department posters.
The Club’s board members invite the public to the annual meeting of the Fine Arts Club at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, at the VSHS Auditorium.
The programs that receives support from the Club involve a majority of the district’s students. The Club seeks to foster the growth of these programs as they continue to strive for excellence.
The new high school facility and the interest shown by local residents have contributed to the selection of the Vinton-Shellsburg High School for district and state speech contests this year, as well as the return of the state jazz contest for a second consecutive year to Vinton.
New Century Fine Arts Club Board members include President LuAnn Urlaub, Vice-President Robert Fischer, Secretary Nancy Beckman, Treasurer William Owens and Director of Communications (and VSHS Band director) Karl Smith.
Members can pay during the annual meeting or mail their checks to Owens at 401 B Avenue, Vinton, IA 52349.
