Dunkerton forfeits first football win

DUNKERTON — Dunkerton High School has been forced to forfeit its 14 -13 victory over Clarksville in its football opener due to an error regarding the eligibility of a student-athlete.

DHS Athletic Director and football coach Jeremy Hesse said his team inadvertently used an academically ineligible player. The school learned of the infraction the Monday after the game and self-reported it to the Iowa High School Athletic Association.

“It was an oversight on the school’s part — we didn’t know,” he said.

Hesse said the school learned of the infraction when it was reported by a neighboring school. He declined to identify the school that had pointed out the infraction or the identity of the student-athlete.

Dunkerton’s victory over CAL (Latimer) will stand, as the ineligible student-athlete did not play in the game.

According to National Federation of State High School Associations rules, the forfeit goes in the books as a 1-0 victory for Clarksville. The non-district game will not affect either team’s eligibility for state playoffs.

Dunkerton was off Friday and hosts Kee High this week.
