Huskies fall on late field goal
EPWORTH – Oelwein suffered its second straight heart-breaking loss of the season as Western Dubuque’s Chris Koch kicked a 36-yard field goal with just 33 seconds left to play, lifting the Bobcats to a 10-7 victory over the Huskies Friday in Class 3A, District 3 action.
The final score of the game came with a little controversy as Oelwein coach Jim Yokas questioned the placement of the ball for the field goal. Western Dubuque ran the ball to its far left and a measurement was taken and the Bobcats were just short of a first down. The ball was then placed near the middle of the field where Koch had a good angle for kicking the game-winning field goal.
Western Dubuque’s winnin g drive came after Oelwein (0-3 overall, 0-1 in the district) coughed the wet ball up at the Western Dubuque 47-yard line in front of the Bobcat bench after an 18-yard pass completion with 4 minutes, 17 seconds to play in the game. The Huskies had just driven 33 yards in three plays before the turnover. The Bobcats ran eight rushing plays and valuable time off the clock before stalling out at the 20 and going for the field goal.
“We were hoping to hold them and go into overtime,” Oelwein coach Jim Yokas said. “It (the fumble) is just part of the game. Wet conditions; they didn’t mean to fumble ... it’s one of those things.”
The Huskies had time for just a few plays at the end of the game but gained no yardage on the first play from scrimmage and then threw an incomplete pass before the Bobcats picked off the next pass to end Oelwein’s hopes of scoring.
Wet conditions were a part of the game as a steady rain fell throughout the night, leading to a slippery field and greasy pigskin. The teams combined for five fumbles and five turnovers. The Huskies also benefited from a turnover as they scored their only points after recovering a Bobcat fumble. Matt Kastli pounced on the fumble at the WD 45 on the second play of the third quarter. Oelwein then ran nine plays capped off by a Paul Yokas four-yard bootleg into the end zone. Aaron Majerus kicked the point after and the game was tied at 7-7 with 7:20 left in the third stanza.
Western Dubuque led 7-0 at halftime after scoring a touchdown in the second quarter. Josh Foxen rumbled in from eight yards out to culminate an 86-yard drive. The Bobcats ran only six plays on the drive as Brian Kass broke loose for a 49-yard scamper and quarterback Landon Klostermann had a 22-yard run. Koch added the point-after kick.
“They did a really good job,” Yokas said. “They only had (two) turnovers. They only put the ball on the ground once all night. They only had (two) penalties. When they can play like that on a night like tonight ...”
Oelwein crossed into Western Dubuque territory just four times and into the red zone just once. The Huskies were forced to punt the ball away seven times, fumbled the ball once and threw two interceptions.
“Like last week, we had opportunities to win but just couldn’t make the big play when we needed it,” Yokas said.
Oelwein’s defense held the Bobcats to just three trips to the red zone and forced four punts. The Huskies held WD from scoring on its first possession when the drive stalled at the Oelwein seven and a field goal attempt failed. The Bobcats also missed a 40-yard field goal try in the fourth quarter. Adam Bell intercepted a WD pass at the Husky 46-yard line to halt a Bobcat drive on their second possession.
“The defense did a nice job in the first half of holding them out,” Yokas said. “They had a couple of big runs but we played better in the second half. We just couldn’t finish.”
P. Yokas led the way for Oelwein as he tallied 140 of the Huskies’ 185 yards of offense. Yokas threw for 74 yards as he completed 8-of-19 passes with one interception and ran for 66 yards on 19 carries. Kastli scampered for 38 yards on one attempt. Josh Stewart caught three passes for 43 yards to lead his team in receptions.
Western Dubuque was paced by two running backs rushing for over 100 yards as Kass had 118 yards on 21 carries and Foxen had 105 yards on 19 attempts.
Oelwein returns to Husky Stadium this Friday where it will take on Independence in district action.
