Starmont rallies to upset No. 5 Springville

    ARLINGTON —  Starmont rallied from a 2-1 deficit to upset fifth-ranked (Class 1A) Springville in five games Tuesday night, 22-25, 31-29, 18-25, 25-23, 15-8.

“The girls were excited,” Coach Robert Goedken said. “Now we just have to concentrate on all the other teams (in the Tri-Rivers Conference) that can come back and get you.”

Goedken said his team let a few early opportunities slip away in game one with missed serves before coming back to win a thrilling second game. Springville got things going in game three to take a 25-18 win.

“They’re a good team,” Goedken said. “In the third game they just ran more offense than we did. It was tied 15-15 and then we couldn’t pass the ball and they ran their fast-paced offense right at us. We found ourselves playing too much defense in the third game.”

The Stars faced defeat in game four, trailing 23-20 before scoring the final five points for the come-from-behind victory. Starmont carried their momentum into game five, leading 11-4 at one point on its way to a 15-8 victory.

“We just played well last night,” Goedken said.

Kersten Phillips led the Stars with 19 kills and seven blocks while Maddy Otdoerfer had 11 kills and Ashley Goedken added nine. Goedken had 25 assists while Heather Vaske hit 17-of-18 serves with three aces. Nicole Goedken was 15-of-15 serving.

The Stars (7-1 overall, 1-0 in the Tri-Rivers) play at Edgewood-Colesburg Thursday.
