Sears paces Union girls to title at CP-U meet
CENTER POINT - Union sophomore Paige Sears finished first at the Center Point-Urbana cross country meet on Tuesday, leading the Knights to a victory in the team contest as well.
Sears had a time of 15:49, which was six seconds ahead of runner-up Shelbie Beatty of East Buchanan. Union’s team score was 34, which was 14 ahead of conference-rival Hudson, who took second.
“Paige Sears ran an outstanding race and surprised herself by winning her first meet at UHS,” Union head coach Andy McQuillen said. “ After battling some health issues, Paige’s true running abilities have been showcased. Her best running is still ahead of her this season.”
Brittany Frush was the next Knight across, coming in fifth. She was the first in a pack of Union runners, with Erin Sears placing seventh, Ashley Frush ninth and Emily Snyder 12th. The four girls were within 23 seconds of each other. Cerina Merchant and Laura Krug rounded out the Union squad with placings of 25th and 30th.
Erika Gauley finished 20th, representing the top time for the Stormin’ Pointers with 17:17. Kailey Bryant was the next Pointer with 18:14, which put her 32nd. CP-U did not have a full varsity squad for the team race.
Hudson won the boys’ race with 40 points. Union was third with 96 and CP-U was fourth with 134.
Knight senior Josh Frush just missed on the individual title, running the race in 17:25 to take second. Monticello’s Jud Schneider won the race in 17:11. Matt Prestemon took 10th place for Union in 18:38.
“The boys ran as well as they have run this season,” McQuillen said. “We are still filling in all of the slots, but everyone appears to be turning the corner.”
Will Norman finished 15th to lead Center Point-Urbana. He had a time of 18:52. Brett Wiggins ran the 26th-best time, with a total of 19:47.
CP-U will next run at Jesup on Tuesday. Union will compete at Grundy Center today before also running at Jesup Tuesday.
