Cooper catch with no time left lifts Raiders past Blue Devils
DUNKERTON — Colt Robinson threw a five-yard scoring pass to Trent Cooper with no time remaining, lifting Dunkerton to a thrilling 32-29 victory over No. 10 West Central in Eight Player, Class 4 play.
“Sometimes it's good to be lucky,” Raider coach Jeremy Hesse admitted.
The Raiders (4-3, 3-2) led most of the game before West Central rallied in the fourth quarter behind the pass-catch combination of Nick Robinson-to-Tyler Wedemeier. The senior duo connected three times in a six-minute span of the fourth quarter as the Blue Devils turned a 20-8 deficit into a 26-20 lead.
Dunkerton came back to tie the game 26-26 on a three-yard Trevor Rigdon run with 3:31 left, and West Central drove close enough that Marvin Miller could knock a 23-yard field goal through with 21 seconds left for a 29-26 lead.
With no timeouts left Dunkerton reached into its bag of tricks, with a hook-and-ladder play to Cooper and then Corey Joens taking the ball to the Devil 35. C. Robinson threw complete to Cooper at the five with two seconds left, and a spike left just 0.2 seconds on the clock. C. Robinson dropped and found Cooper in the corner of the end zone for the winning score.
Hesse said Cooper wasn’t even where he was supposed to be on the play.
“He was supposed to slant in and cut it out, but he was able to make a diving catch in the end zone,” the coach said. “It’s one of those things where you stare at it in disbelieve.”
The victory allows Dunkerton to control its own destiny as it seeks its first-ever postseason berth. The Raiders have games against sub-.500 Springville and Olin left, and wins over both assure them of no worse than fourth place in the district. West Central also controls its destiny, but it has games against tough Central City and Kee High remaining.
