Organ recital to posthumously honor recognized organist

CLERMONT - An organ recital will be held at the Union Sunday School, located at 406 Mill Street in Clermont, IA. on Sunday, October 26th . The program begins at 2:30 p.m.
The program this month will feature a “Tribute to August Knoll”, Wheatland, Iowa.
Knoll was scheduled to perform a recital on Oct. 26, at the Union Sunday School in Clermont. Sadly, Mr. Knoll died unexpectedly on Feb. 7 at his home in Wheatland.
August played piano and organ for several churches in and around Wheatland. He was a member of the Iowa Band Masters Association, American School Band Directors Association, North East Iowa Band Masters Association, Dean of the Blackhawk Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and the Eastern Iowa Chapter of the Organ Historical Society.
He was the recipient of the Iowa Bandmasters Association Karl K. King Distinguished Service Active and Karl L. King Distinguished Service Retires Awards as well as the North Eastern Iowa Bandmasters Association Phillip Sehmann Excellence in Teaching Award. He was listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in Education.
August has performed a recital on the 1896 Kimball Organ at the Union Sunday School in Clermont the last Sunday in October every year since 1989.
The Oct. 26 tribute to August (Augie) will be hosted by Marcia Lofdahl of Cedar Rapids. Ms. Lofdahl has shared the program with Mr. Knoll many times over the past years. Other participants sharing in the program will be; Dennis and Leslie Ungs, organ and flute, Riverside, Iowa—Ruth Hurlburt , organ. Hulburt is from North Liberty.
All organists have studied at the University of Iowa, and all were friends and colleagues of August and all are area musicians.
A variety of music will be presented by friends of August. Dennis Ungs is continuing the tradition of beginning the program with Callahan’s “Star Spangled Banner.”
There is no admission to attend the recitals.
although there is an opportunity to give a free-will donation at the door.
Refreshments will be served at the Larrabee School (one block north of the Union Sunday School) following the recital.
The recital series are co-sponsored by Montauk and the local Clermont Historical Society.
