Rowland reclaims seat

WEST UNION - Democrats made a clean sweep in the contested races in Fayette County.

Democrat Vicki Rowland retained her seat on the Fayette County Board of Supervisors receiving 5,666 votes, defeating challengers Republican Larry Wedo of Elgin and Independent Larry Nefzger of West Union. Wedo had  3,300 votes and Nefzger received 975 votes.

In another three way race Republican Lori Moellers of West Union received 4,066 votes, according to unnofficial results, to beat Democrat Karla Organist of Fayette, 3,899 votes, and Independent Richard Kittelson of Clermont, 1,895 votes.

U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (D) won a fifth term and was the winner in Fayette County. He had 6,790 votes compared to  3,321 votes for his opponent Christopher Reed (R).


Incumbent Bruce Braley (D) was the top vote getter in Fayette County in the race for U.S. Representative First District. He had 6,578 votes compared to 3,351 votes for Republican challenger David Hartsuch.

Democrat incumbent Brian Schoenjahn of Arlington was the winner in Fayette County in the race for the District 12 Senate seat with 1,523 votes. His Republican opponent, Rebecca Wearmouth had 745 votes.

Incumbent Andrew Wenthe (D) of Hawkeye won the race for the District 18 State Representative seat in Fayette County with 4,738 votes. Challenger Austin Lorenzen (R) from Denver, formerly of Oelwein, had 3,027 votes.

Democrate Gene Ficken upset incumbent Dan Rasmussen in the race for District 23 State Representative. Ficken had 115 votes and Rasmussen had 50 votes.
