Women's basketball uses big rally to defeat top 25 team in championship

Waverly - Wartburg overcame a 24-3 deficit in the first 10 minutes and toppled D3Hoops.com No. 23-ranked St. Norbert College of De Pere, Wis., 53-50, Wednesday.

Head coach Bob Amsberry’s squad, improving to 7-4 with its sixth straight win, chipped away at the early disadvantage to move within 29-17 at halftime.

The Knights continued to come back in the second stanza, taking their first lead at 49-48 when junior forward Abbey Hempen of Clarksville dropped in a three-point basket with 2:36 left.

Wartburg iced the win by hitting three of four free throw attempts down the stretch.


The win clinched the second consecutive tournament title for the Orange and Black, as they claimed the top spot at their own AmericInn Holiday Classic.

Freshman guard Abi Weidemann of Iowa Falls, en route to all-tournament honors, was in double figures in points with 13. She also dished out a team-best three assists. Junior guard Samantha Harrington of Nashua and Hempen added eight points each with Harrington’s outing wrapping up tournament Most Valuable Player honors.

Amsberry’s group resumes Iowa Conference play with a 6 p.m. tip–off against Simpson College of Indianola at Levick Arena Wednesday.

Men's basketball topples Div. II foe

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Four players finished in double figures, as Wartburg College concluded a successful Florida trip with a rousing 94-90 win over NCAA Division II previously once-beaten Florida Tech Wednesday.

The Knights, improving to 7-4 and ending their three-game Sunshine State trek with a 2-1 mark, trailed the Panthers (10-2) by 11 in the final five minutes of the first half. The Orange and Black used a 15-2 run to close the stanza for a 44-42 edge at the break. Wartburg posted 50 points in the final half and were tied only once en route to the win.

Senior forward Kelly McCarville of Cresco scored a team-high 28 points, which tied a personal single-game career high.

He also pulled down 10 rebounds, dished out six assists, blocked a FTU shot attempt and turned in two steals. Fellow senior forward Mitch Eslick of Fort Dodge was strong from the outside, going for 25 points which included five three-pointers. Sophomore guard Cole Danielson of Marshalltown added 19 points and seven rebounds, while freshman guard Mitchell Murphy of Cresco finished with 10 points and six assists.

The four individual performances highlighted a sparkling team effort. Wartburg hit better than 62 percent from the field (36 of 58) and 50 percent from outside the arc (nine of 18). The Orange and Black also committed three fewer turnovers (16 to 19) and were out-rebounded by just two (32-30).

"I can't say enough about the team and the way they played...ending a tough three-game stretch in three days," head coach Dick Peth said.

Wartburg returns home to begin a nine-game Iowa Conference January stretch with an 8 p.m. tip-off against Simpson College Wednesday.
